YSC Coordinator, Christy Hardin, has been working with the Youth Service Center to make a comfortable hangout space for students with unstable housing. The Youth Service Center’s goal is to provide students with comfortability in school, providing things like snacks, clothes, and other amenities to students who are struggling. With the new Harbor House, students will be able to attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Harbor House is located at the Frank E. Simon Community Center in Shepherdsville, Ky.
“This is a place where they can hang out outside of school. Get some snacks, eat some dinner, and hang out with their friends.” Said Hardin. She wants to make sure students know that this is not academic focused, but instead just a place where they can relax.
This recreational activity for teens is meant to welcome them with a warm feeling that is much like home. “We have a pinball machine, karaoke, gaming systems, cornhole, and dinner.” A place where students can meet with their friends and have fun, and maybe make a few new friends.
The Harbor House also offers tutoring for anyone who asks for it, but nothing is required. This way teenagers can have some free time outside of school and not have to worry about where to go or what they will do after school, and get help if they need it.
Much like the Youth Service Center in the school building, there is no cost, and all BC students are welcome. The Harbor House also hosts occaisional parties. They planned to have a Valentines day party, but due to unforseen circumstances, it has been postponed. The Harbor House often has parties where all students are welcome, regardless of where they are staying after school.
