Is Taylor Swift ruining football?

Is+Taylor+Swift+ruining+football%3F

With Taylor Swift having dominated the pop genre for years on end, and Travis Kelce becoming a growingly popular name in sports, they, as a couple, are a metaphorical peanut butter-and-jelly-like pair that took the world by storm.

Many football fans seem to think Swift might be ruining the sport, but is this true? More than likely not. The internet (and sports fans) have a long history of blowing things like this out of proportion and making them bigger than they are.

When the two announced their relationship in July 2023, it sent shockwaves throughout the web, with fans of the singer showing their utmost love and support for the couple, and fans of the Kansas City Chiefs tight-end sharing some less-than-satisfied responses.

One user on X (Formerly known as Twitter), @jeannebodine, shared a Tweet reading “Taylor Swift has ruined football. No joke”. Another incident, following the AFC championship game, took a negative turn when a disgruntled football fan confronted Swift in person, delivering a verbal attack and accusing her of singlehandedly “ruining the NFL”.

While it’s easy to get caught up in something you’re passionate about, football fans are going a bit far by verbally assaulting someone over something as simple as a sport, with this incident highlighting the intensity of some football enthusiasts’ discontent with the newfound association between Swift and Kelce.

As Super Bowl LVIII approached, concerns grew among football fans about the potential impact of Swift’s involvement on the sport’s fan base. Worries were expressed regarding the possibility of Swift changing the dynamics of football fandom for the worse.

The apprehensions centered on the idea that Swift’s celebrity status and the attention surrounding their relationship could serve as a distraction for Kelce, diverting his focus from professional pursuits within the NFL.

However, not everyone shares these concerns. Despite the vocal criticism and negative reactions from some football fans, some believe that the impact of Swift’s association with Kelce on his professional career may be overstated.

Journalist and social media influencer Megyn Kelly shared her perspective on her radio show The Megyn Kelly Show, saying, “I don’t give a s*** what Taylor Swift is doing in the box; I just don’t want to see her after every single play… She’s not Jesus!” This dissenting opinion reflects a division of views on the extent to which their high-profile relationship might reshape the traditional dynamics of football fandom.

Other celebrities though, have been quick to defend Swift and Kelce’s relationship, with Kansas City-based rapper and singer Tech N9ne saying “They can be mad at us, they can be mad at Taylor Swift, but we don’t give a damn! We’re gonna keep winning!” with this sentiment being reiterated by fans of the pop sensation.
